The Virginia Air & Space Center is located close to two major military installations: the Langley Air Force Base, and Naval Station Norfolk.
Langley AFB is one of the oldest Air Force facilities. It was established on 30 December 1916, prior to America's entry into World War I. Langley Field was the first air service base built especially for air power, is the oldest continually active air force base in the world, and is the oldest airfield in Virginia.
Naval Station Norfolk is the world's largest naval station, supporting 75 ships and 134 aircraft alongside 14 piers and 11 aircraft hangars. The base houses the largest concentration of U.S. Navy forces. Air Operations conducts an average of 275 flights per day or one every six minutes.
