It can take up to two years of rigorous training to become a fully qualified astronaut. Astronaut candidates attend classes in science and technology: mathematics, geology, meteorology, guidance and navigation, oceanography, orbital dynamics, astronomy, physics, medical procedures, and materials processing. They also receive training in land and sea survival training, scuba diving, and space suits.
Graduation from the Astronaut Candidate Program requires successful completion of International Space Station systems training, Extravehicular Activity skills training, Robotics skills training, Russian language training, and aircraft flight readiness training. Completion of the training program does not ensure selection as an astronaut.
